Mesopotamia Is Great :: World History

Mesopotamia Is GreatThe Land Between the Rivers has been a source of both knock down barbarism and great elaborations. Mesopotamian culture reached its peak between ca 3000-550 BCE. Yet, much of Mesopotamian culture goes unnoticed, despite its rich heritage. A vast bulk of the great ahead of time civilizations developed in the land known as Mesopotamia. It can, in fact, be proven, without question, that because of Mesopotamias extensive trade routes, its excellent leaders, and the astronomical growth in technology that occurred, that Mesopotamia was matchless of the greatest civilizations to have ever existed. For its time, Mesopotamian culture had the greatest trade routes. Its trade network reached from the sands of Egypt to the deserts in India. Most certainly no civilization in the western world at that time had not heard of the great cultures that existed between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Egypt, in itself, had an excellent trade route with its access to the Mediterranean sea. Mesopotamia, however, had trade routes not only in Egypt, however in gayy other locations to the east as well. All previous trade routes had been confined from sm wholly town to village. Through its extensive trade route, it can be seen that Mesopotamia was a great civilization. Mesopotamia did not only have trade routes as a testament to its greatness, but a flourishing government as well. As Mesopotamia was racked with barbarian invasions, the rise of some of Historys most fearsome and great leaders can be seen. Sargon I, for example, managed to merge one of the largest areas of civilization at that time. Sargon I is also noted having never lost a single war in his entire life. As well, with Mesopotamia, the depression system-and indeed the most extensive in that point in time-of codified law. King Hammurabis aptly titled system of codified law, the Code of Hammurabi, while patently harsh in todays view, was heralded as a just and fair law back in its day. History also shows that one of the greatest Ziggurats of all time was created in the land of Mesopotamia.. Nebuchadrezzar IIs Hanging Gardens of Bablyon is noted as being one of the greatest marvels of the ancient world. With such a glorious string of leaders, it is intelligible to conclude that Mesopotamia was one of the greatest civilizations ever to have existed. Aside from its string of incredible leaders, History shows that Mesopotamian culture gave birth to some of the greatest technology man has ever developed.

Diversity Essay :: College Admissions Essays

Diversity EssayMom Tell him to get off me cried my child in Farsi to my mother. My mother ran into the room and pulled me, kicking and screaming, off of my older babe. My sister had come home from her first day of school, and was by this time crying. After issuing her punishment and telling me never to hit my sister again, my mother demanded to jazz why I was so upset. She went to school today, Mom, and she wont teach me English I sobbed.Of course, it was foolish of me to think that my sister could teach me a cutting wording after her first day of school, but I was too young and frustrated to know any better. My frustration was caused by living in a foreign land and not knowing the language, and was amplified by our poverty. I did not have many toys and could not play with other children my age because of the language barrier. I was only two-and-a-half years old when my family moved to America from Iran to avoid the onslaught of the Iran-Iraq war. I was too young to remember any details, but the war stories I have heard are horrifying. Children were used as human sacrifices to deactivate landmines and sent to the battlefields with keys that would allow them access to Heaven. My parents envisioned a future for my sister and I somewhere that would shield us from such atrocities and allow us to advance our lives, even at the expense of their own. The strength that they displayed in sacrificing their own lives for our opportunities has been an sacred force throughout my life.My mother worked at a laundry service in an apartment complex, and because we had no car or babysitter, I had to wake up mornings and walk with her to work. Several residents noticed me sitting impatiently in the cramped workspace and tried to entertain me in any way that they could. One of the residents, a long-shanked man with funny-looking glasses, was a magician who gave me a copy of a childrens book. I could tell from the pictures that it was a book about a penguin, but I could not yet read its contents. I appreciated the gift, and because I liked this man who would show me card tricks and make funny voices, I was inspired to ensure to read it.

Are Compact Cities a Desirable Planning Goal? :: essays research papers

Are abridge Cities a Desirable Planning Goal? The article written by Peter Gordon and Harry W. Richardson entitled Are Compact Cities a Desirable Planning Goal? shows various arguments against the reason for succinct cities to become implemented. They use the city of Toronto in the beginning of the article to compare it with cities in the United States. Throughout the article many topics and arguments are discussed which are agricultural land, density preferences, skill glut, the scope for move through, suburbanization and congestion, the efficiency of compactness, technology and agglomeration-congestion trade-offs, downtowns in eclipse, rent-seeking and politics, compactness and equity, and contest among cities. From these issues displayed in the article, many valuable arguments could be agreed with. The authors used valuable data from past research done on the topics discussed in presenting their argument against compact cities. Two main points from the article were considered m ost interesting. The issues of density preferences and energy glut discussed by the authors were quite interesting and have made a valid point. starting of all as discussed in the article concerning density preferences, the authors make it clear that most people preferred low-density living as opposed to high-density living. As stated by Gordon and Richardson, The choice for low-density living is influenced by instruments promoting suburbanization, such as preferential income tax treatment of home mortgage interest, subsidies to automobile use, and interstate avenue system (Gordon and Richardson, 96). The previous quote identifies the preference people have concerning suburbanization. Because of preferential income tax treatment of home mortgage interest, subsidies to automobile use, and interstate highway systems low-density living is preferred. One great factor also concerning low-density preference is the fact that more funds are given to highways and parking than transit as st ated by the authors. Federal, state and local expenditures for highways and parking were $66.5 billion in 91. Federal, state and local expenditures for public transit were $20.8 billion (Gordon and Richardson, 96). As seen in the quote, more subsidies are given to highways making having an automobile beneficial. Another key proponent is that congestion pricing and emission fees are not present in most U.S. states making it less difficult to drive long distances. Since low-density preference is one key issue concerning suburbanization, another compelling argument is that energy costs are low in the U.S. Since energy is cheap, the cost of gasoline is likewise. It is stated in the article that per capita energy consumption is below the level of consumption as it was in 1973 in the U.

Mexico and the Quest for Economic Improvement :: Free Essays Online

Mexico and the Quest for Economic Improvement Karl Marx once sayd, A commodity appears at first sight, a very trivial social occasion and easily understood. Its analysis shows that it is in reality, a very queer thing, abounding in metaphysical subtleties and theological niceties. Ironically, Marx would have never anticipated the fight over queer space that I am going to detail. The commodification of Aguascalientes, Mexico has been nonetheless a very queer thing indeed. The space in Aguascalientes has been torn aside by competing ideals surrounding sexuality and gay and lesbian identity, yet both sides in this competition have a common interest selling a specific commoditynamely, the space of AguascalientesIn September 2000, Mr. Jorge Alvarez Medina, the Director of Regulations of Aguascalientes, in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes, publicly announced his opposition to gays, lesbians, and transgender people. He stated that he will not allow this type of people access to any p ublic facility or allow them to work in the public sector. Medina to a fault claimed that Aguascalientes needed to portray a cleaner image to the public. Many LGBT and human rights organizations claim this act to be prejudiced, corrupt, and violent. The order made by Medina is also a threat to Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, All are equal before the law and are entitled without any divergence to equal protection before the law. This is only one of the many events that have occurred in Aguascalientes pertaining to gay, lesbian and transgender relations, where, according to some estimates, there are more than 12,200 gays (more than 10% of overall population). By analyzing these statements made by Medina, many questions arise. If Medina is tying to portray a cleaner image in the city of Aguascalientes, for whom is this image? Curiously the Mexonline website gives Aguascalientes a different reputation, contradicting Medinas biased proposal. The Me xonline website gives its audience the impression that Aguascalientes has a very accepting and diverse society. The website states, Aguascalientes is good positioned to mull full-steam ahead into the 21st century. We are well aware that our future rests on our export capacity. World demarcation leaders, who have already located in the state, share our vision and, together with our local business community, our industrious labor force, and our imaginative policy makers, have joined hands and laid the foundation for a prosperous and happy society in this, the state of friendly people.

Express Luxury Lines

Empress Luxury Lines Angela D. Davis Strayer University Management 500 Dr. Prakash Menon April 29, 2012 Abstract This critical analysis case of Empress Luxury Lines is based on circumstances of honourable dilemmas and challenges of pass level managers and their employees faced with stopping points on what anyone person or persons would do against make ethical margininations. In this case study, we note that the employee has to fuddle choices for doing what he believes is right for him even though it may character possible termination.Despite of the needed estimator upgrade for the Empress Luxury Liner for Empress, top management issues was to describe otherwise ways to limit cost. The luxury liner had fallen on hard times due to numerous factors some of which was not controllable by this business. In this case analysis we will explore how right or wrong conclusiveness making pile create ethical dilemmas for a business. set about with such dilemmas, we will try to under stand how in decision making for the employees, managers, CFOs affects the business entity.Empress Luxury Lines ANALAYZE ANTONIOS ETHICAL DILEMMA Antonio Melendez, a two year employee of Empress Luxury Lines was starting to feel as stated by Daft, finally found a way to fund the computer outline upgrade hed been requesting ever since hed taken the job two years ago ( 2010, p. 150). Antonio, creation that he was only on the job two years, and Kevin Pfeiffer, the new hire, the ethical decision dilemma for them was in facing the truth about the power surge damaged that struck the displace to its onboard computer agreement.Antonio knew that the risk in de pranking the insurance company of the true nature of what happened to the computer system onboard the ship could have dire consequences for him and Kevin. Kevin told the truth to his supervisor Phil Bailey, of the $15,000 computer damaged and was told to report back only to his boss Phil Bailey. Kevin did exactly what he believed w ould be great news of the minimum fixable damage, but Phil was not happy. Instead, Kevin was instructed to remove and set down all the wires and the cables and haul them elsewhere so that the insurance adjuster upon arrival would not know the difference in the damage.Kevin refused choosing to make the intelligent ethical decision to not due as instructed and to not become part of a fraud scheme or the culture of top management habitually submitting ambidextrous claims. Antonio appreciated Kevins integrity of making the best decision to not do as he was asked to do for Empress and his boss Phil Bailey. Antonio knew of years before he was hired, Empress Luxury Lines in the 1990s, were a healthy business. The cruise liner had unprecedented demand by consumers to travel on its luxury liner. Unfortunately, with external threats of unforeseen causes, such as the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. , the Hurricanes of 2005, and the Norwalk Virus outbreak, Empresss volume of tourist booking travel by ship fell off drastically. Empress had to quittance monies to its clients for cruises they could not use due to these uncertainties. In essence, contingency planning was enacted to respond to the unexpected conditions of weather, terrorism, and medical emergencies. The current rising demand of fuel cost to sail the cruse liner, slashed into the luxury liners profits. This is why Antonio could not or did not see his fervent request to have monies to upgrade the ships computer system was not accepted.Until the damage of the computer system was verbally reported to Bailey, then the accepted practices of Empress by top management of fraud which was readily the con through with(p) nature, the agency of Kevin, or Antonio being protected under the Whistle-blower act was essentially an ignored, systemic practice and rooted in the business climate culture from top to bottom. CREATE AND DESCRIBE TWO STRATEGIES In this case analysis the strategies to best describe how to address Antonios ethical dilemma would be by victimization two approaches in ethical decision making. The approaches that can best address Antonios in this case study be the Utilitarian Approach and the individualisation Approach. These approaches best describe how Antonio should handle the situation at hand. The utile approach by definition Daft , the ethical concept that moral behaviors produce the superior good for the greatest number (2010, p. 132). This approach Antonio is ethical decision maker and he understands the consequences of actions and plans to benefit for the greater good for Empress. If Antonio chooses to use this approach he has the measure of the organizations systemic practices but he has to figure out how to lead by example while limiting potential dire results for Empress by reporting what really happened to the insurance adjuster and authorities. If Antonio decides to stay quiet and do secret code he knows the risk and the ethical sit downigation that could ensue by law. The decision to do nothing hurts but if this is his decision, to help defraud the insurance company, the up berth is that Empress will have a upgraded and repaired computer system.I would equate the 2008 fraud case involving the SBA Program of widespread fraud with the HUBZone Empowerment Contracting program similar to how systemic practices of obvious fraud with rewarding contracts to business firms who were not eligible to receive such funding. Bruce Causseaux, a aged level specialist stated, Three main factors worked to encourage the fraud, he says the lure of several billion dollars of federal contracting, an SBA control process that largely relied on inadequately verified self-importance-certified information and a clear message that, even if caught, the punishment would not match the crime (Wilson, 2008 p. 0). This article exemplifies the seriousness that when it all goes wrong, in the useful approach the benefit yielded still the lesser of a potentially disastrous result. The laissez faire approachs by definition Daft, the ethical concept that acts are moral when they promote the individuals best long-term interest (2010, p. 132). This approach helps Antonio because he believes in the fundamental rights of individuals in the ethical decision making process. If Antonio chooses to avoid the systemic behavior by Empress because it will impede on a persons right then he would be ethically deciding to go against the grain of behavior even though he knows he may lose his job by telling the truth. The issue with this approach who determines the legitimacy of what is ethical or not about the way the cruise liner decides to conduct its business. Antonio/s plan of action hangs on the real balancing act of being loyal only to himself, to the health of the company and or lastly, for the greatest good of Empress.Antonio has to really be comfortable in which ever decision ethically he will make. ASSESS THE PROS AND CONS The pros and cons of the utilitarian approac h if Antonio so believes is the best approach he has the option to weigh the differences looking at how his decision will payoff his fellow coworkers. For this case analysis, I believe the utilitarian is better suited for Antonio because this approach is not a selfish approach but more in line with having the thoughtfulness of care and concern for others and how his ethical decision could harm everyone.Antonio does not consider he is just a lone wolf in this decision process because he sees the dilemma as equal parts to be held by together by the belief of all. Antonio relies on the method of stub process quantitatively in his overall objective to be fair for the consideration of the whole in making a just, moral, and pro ethical decision. The utilitarian approach con is in understanding and recognizing the cost benefits of his decision. This approach does not allow for room to be appeasing to all of his coworkers and this approach can cause harm. The end does not always justify t he means as this approach states. In the con of this approach, can Antonio assume the result of perhaps not being ethically honest could yield a positive result no matter of the facts presented to the insurance adjuster? This may happen and he is still left with the decision did he do his best in rising above the fray to do his ethical duty. The pros and con of the individualism approach on the pro side is Antonio will be respecting the rights of his coworkers and doing what is best for the common good of Empress. Antonio will also be protecting his rights as an individual which is a benefit for him.Antonio has to be prudent in upholding for pro rights to not step over the rights of others. A con of the individual approach is could be the true meaning in defining a persons fundamental rights. This is a con of this approach because in the U. S. we have included our U. S. Constitution the Bill of Rights. If Antonio thinks this is the best approach because the Empress sails in interna tionalist waters Antonio has to have consideration for the international laws of other countries which the U. S. Constitution with the Bill of Rights wont apply.Another con of this approach is that it is a selfish approach and can entice Antonio to consider only his needs and not the concerns of others. DECIDE ON WHICH STRATEGY TO TAKE Given the two approaches of utilitarian and individualism, I would choose the individualism approach for this case analysis if I was in Antonios position. I am not a selfish person by nature and in making business decisions I know that the ability to think in ethical decision making when a problem presents itself one has to be ready, voluntary and able to perform the task of airing on the side of fairness.I have had similar instances as Antonio in being the one who has to be concerned for his self but by being this way, you ultimately do decide for the good all in the process of ethically doing what is best for the future long term health of the comp any. Individualism by behavior alone can ensure fellow coworkers that action done ethically for the best business ethical decision outcome is in the best interest of the whole. This action inspires cohesiveness and conformity in our feelings of our behavior. In their book If Your Life were a Business, would you Invest in It? (2003), Eckblad and Kiel states, When we acknowledge these feelings in ourselves and reflect on them, we often find their origin in one or more situations where we wish we had had the courage to have challenged someone or done something differently and businesslike thinking and planning are no guarantee that there will be good or courageous people in either jobs or our live (Eckblad & Kiel, 2008, p. 37). The individualism approach has worked well for me in my business endeavors and personal life. My willingness to be fair, but yet knowing what ever decisions I make whether they are ethically based on a ethical dilemma or not, I firmly understand that not all deci sions I chose to make was good for the whole and that you can not know the true value of the dilemma in your decision choice of how it will relate to other employees or coworkers. This is the dilemma for Antonio.I do think his best method of approach would be using the individualism approach for Empress Luxury Lines. He will not please all but he will be ethically making the best decision for the greater good of the company. References Daft, Richard L. (2010). Management. Mason, OH South-Western Cengage Learning. Imagery in Macbeth

Shakespeargons Effective role of Imagery to Display Powerful Themes Fair is foul and foul is fair Hover through with(predicate) the fog and filthy air. (1. 1. 11-12). This famous chant lies in the opening scene of William Shakespeares tragedy Macbeth, providing dark loathsomeness go forry to evoke the senses and set a t unitary for the play. Images are strong sensory techniques that can be used as a basis for much moreover development in some(prenominal) piece of literature. A black cat, a dark alley and a stormy night are all modern day symbols of mystery and evil doings.Authors often times use these or similar images to embellish the plot by designing a setting or giving the char cultivateers more depth. much significantly, images provide a solid ground which gives underpinning to important themes of the pen. William Shakespeare very skillfully uses imaginativeness to support prevalent themes of his drama Macbeth. Poison of the nous, the power of ones thoughts and falseh ood are all significant themes carried throughout the play by effective use of resourcefulness in reference to serpents, ghostly visions and ill-fitted habiliment.Powerful images creep through the tragedy at every scene to construct a venomous atmosphere of false virtue and self-deceit. To start, Shakespeare effectively uses serpent imagery to illustrate the idea that power whitethorn act as a virus that toxicants the sagaciousness and leads to moral and self-destruction. For instance, the power that Macbeth achieves through the violent act of murdering Duncan acts as a disease embedded into his mind that warps and twists his thinking. His only focus now is what evil acts must be done in order to ensure that his crown is safe. He expresses these poisonous thoughts when speaking to his wife about his idea to exterminate those threatening his title O, full of scorpions is my mind. (3. 2. 36). The powerful image of scorpions crawling through his brain, injecting their venomous thou ghts effectively demonstrates how power can act as a poison that challenges moral thinking and sets people on a wrath of destruction.By providing a very sinister, wicked image of the diseased mind a common theme of the poison in power is successfully illustrated to the reader. Similarly, Lady Macbeth empha sizes the idea that in order to carry out those actions necessary to claim such power they must possess poisoned blood look give care the innocent flower/ But be the serpent undert. (1. 5. 64-65). This striking image that compares Macbeth to a serpent enhances the suggestion that his strive to maintain authority has transformed him into a toxic creature with venomous blood.Such compelling imagery gives the reader a sense of his sickly soul, thus further amplifying the idea that supremacy acts as a sickness that infects the mind and disrupts moral judgment. In summary, the use of serpent and poison imagery firmly expresses a central idea of the play power is a virus that contami nates the mind and leads to moral and self-destruction. In the same way that Shakespeare uses imagery to emphasize the idea of power acting as a virus, he also makes use of images to portray the theme that the physical world (reality) is not unendingly as real as the thoughts in ones mind.First of all, as Macbeth is preparing the murder of King Duncan his innermost thoughts come to life when his anxiety gives rise to the phantasm of a dagger, the handle pointed to him and the blade aimed at Duncan. In a soliloquy, Macbeth expresses his confusion when he is unable to clutch the blade Mine eyes are make the fools o the former(a) senses, or else worth all the rest. (2. 1. 43-45). The vision is so strong to him that Macbeth is unable to determine whether his eyes are incorrect or his other senses (such as the sense of touch) are failing him.The ghostly vision and Macbeths heavy belief in what clearly isnt in that respect illustrates the power in ones thoughts compared to the reality of the universe, further highlighting a key theme of the play. Furthermore, Macbeth experiences an tied(p) more passionate response to illusory thoughts when he believes to shape the ghost of Banquo sitting at his place the night of his feast. At the sight of the ghost, Macbeth loses all sense of reality and begins speaking to the ghost amid all of his guests Prithee, sit thereBehold Look Lo How say you? Why, what care I? If thou canst nod speak too. (3. 4. 69-70). Once again, the way Shakespeare depicts the power of these visions to Macbeth through his ghost imagery better reinforces the strength of our internal thoughts. Shakespeares use of ghost imagery, and more notably Macbeths strong reaction to them, positively expresses the theme of ones inner thoughts providing a stronger reality than the physical world. In a similar fashion to the way Shakespeare applies ghost imagery to depict an idea of the strength in ones innermost thoughts, he effectively constructs the lesson that hypocrisy goes against nature and will not work in the long run with his use of clothing imagery. The clothing imagery is used to demonstrate that the persona Macbeth is attempting to possess is not actually his the moral standards he claims to have as a loyal King do not match with his actions. For example, when Macbeth is given title Thane of Cawdor, he asks Angus Why do you dress me in borrowd robes? (1. . 108-109), indicating that they are literally not his, they belong to the current Thane of Cawdor. However on a more symbolic level, the image of these borrowed robes demonstrates that Macbeths honors do not really belong to him. They have been borrowed, even stolen and he should not possess such a title. Thus, the clothing image helps to emphasize the idea that false virtue is unjust, further developing a major(ip) theme in the drama. Also, the clothing imagery throughout the play aids in revealing this theme by hinting at the idea that Macbeths naked title does not fit him right. For example, in act 5 when Angus speaks of Macbeth Now does he feel his title hang loose about him, like a giants robe/ Upon a dwarfish theif. (5. 2. 20-22), the reader is given a very awkward an obscure image, revealing Macbeth as a small, dishonorable man covered in garments that are unsuited to him. This advances the thought of Macbeth standing as a fraud his clothing is not tailored to his size just as his personality is not tailored to the position he holds. He does not belong in that position of power, he should not be in that position of power and the obscure image if ill-fitted clothing really proves the idea that this is not right, it is unnatural. In short, Shakespeares use of clothing imagery helps to develop a central theme that hypocrisy is against nature, further emphasizing his ability to illustrate prevalent themes through images. Evidently, Shakespeare utilizes a variety of images to effectively illustrate the important themes of Macbeth. His use of poison imag ery to display the virus of power, ghostly images to portray strength in ones innermost thoughts and clothing imagery to demonstrate that hypocrisy goes against nature are all examples of the way Shakespeare employs this technique. This cunning use of words that appear to the senses give the reader a powerful picture to provide further understanding of underlying themes already present in the writing. Such a method of writing has since been used by many other authors to enhance their writing and better depict significant themes.

Language Paper Essay

Language depose be looked at differently from other types of cognitions. There is a need for wrangle in one form or a nonher to have the ability to communicate with other human beings. This communication is the basis to how human beings express themselves to those around them. With this expression comes the ability to formulate thoughts. These thoughts underside buoy be translated to others through language. This language play an all-important(prenominal) berth when analyzing, problem-solving, cralimentation reasons, communicating needs, and making plans.Without the existence of language the attempt for humans to achieve goals would be most impossible to accomplish. Goals would have to be accomplished be figuring out an alternative method than language to be used for sciences, history, mathematics, and the ability to explain olden experiences or cultures. Because language is such an important communication tool, this paper will go into the definition of language and lexicon, evaluating the key features of language, with a description of the four levels of the language structure and touch on, and analyzing the role of language processing in cognitive psychology. .Define LanguageBecause there is so many different ways of language it can be difficult to provide just one. Cognitive psychology defines language as a administration of communication that is governed by a system of rules and can express an infinite number of propositions. In addition, natural language has two criteria. First it must be governed by a set of rules knows as grammar. mo it must be productive an infinite number of things can be expressed (Galotti, 2015). But there be some factors that argon deemed to be deprecative in the communication of human language. The factors that be deemed critical are communicative, arbitrary, structured, generative, and dynamic(Willingham, 2007).These critical items that are necessary for the formation of language starts with communicative. Communica tive will support communication between individuals. Arbitrary which means that a sound will stand for a meaning. Language, which needs to be structured and must follow a logical browse to make sense. Generative which means that there are a limitless number of meanings that are associated to the word. Dynamic which means that language is invariably changing, growing, and adapting (Willingham, 2007).Define LexiconLexicon is defined as the mental store and is thought to be the keeper of the cognitive processors fellowship of words, which also includes the spelling, pronunciation, definition, and parts of wrangle (Galotti, 2015). Most researchers have a belief that when people recognize words through the process of matching where the spoken word will be compared with a mental dictionary. This mental dictionary is known as the lexicon. The lexicon is the foot bridge between language and knowledge (Willingham, 2007).This communication bridge for lexicons will vary depending on how a nd where a lexicon is used. However, the grammaticalizations will be different depending on the type of language being used. The words and expressions used in each language will be the lexicon for that individual language. Therefore an individual persons own set of vocabulary would have their own private lexicon attached to it that would be their own personal storage whole of their knowledge.Evaluate Key Features of LanguageCharles Hackett identified 13 features of human language and how the human language is differs from other forms of communication. Four key factors are vocal-auditory channel, specialization, arbitrariness, and traditional transmissions. Vocal-auditory channel is defined as the means that the standard human language occurs vocal (creation of sound by mouth) type of communication that can be perceived by hearing it (Hyde, 1998). Specialization is the use of organs in the production of talk and these organs are able to adapt to the task of speech. fashion model w ould be the lips, tongue, a throat of a human that have been specially adapted to the task of speech and not just to assist as an eating apparatus.Whereas, dogs do nothave the physical capabilities for the speech sounds that humans have the capability of because dogs lack the necessary specialized organs (Hyde, 1998). Arbitrariness is where there is no necessary connection between form of the signal and what is being referred to. An example would be a very large object like a goliath and yet it is referred to with a very short word. Some would argue that four-legged animals could then be referred to as the sounds they make. However, the sounds animals make do not always translate crosswise culture borders and therefore even onomatopoeic words would be to some extent also arbitrary (Hyde, 1998).Traditional transmissions has the meaning that human language is not something that exist from birth. Even though language does not exist from birth humans are born with some ability to perfo rm language. In order for humans to perform language they will need to learn, acquire, the language that is spoken around them from others who speak the language. Learning language by listening to others is different from the communication theory in the animal world. In the animal world animals are born knowing their entire systems. Such is the case with bumble bees who are born with the knowledge of dance and song birds that are born with the knowledge of bird-songs.Describe the four levels of language structure and processing The four levels of language structure and processing are phonemes, words, sentences, and text. Phonemes is the shortest segment of speech that if changed would change the meaning of the word (Goldstein, 2014). There are 44 phonemes that make up the basic unit of sound (Galotti, 2015). The basic unit of sounds will vary from different languages. The study of the different ways that phonemes can be combined in any language is called phonology. Once you have s pue the sounds together the task then contracts to put the sounds in a coherent way, identifying the meaningful units of language and this aspect is known as morphology (Galotti, 2015). These sounds then become words, sentences, and text. Words should be placed in a sentence will have importance to the understanding of the sentence. Text will be a convocation of sentences that once placed together will be the formation of the paragraph in reference to a certain subject.Analyze the role of language processing in cognitive psychology How humans process information is a key factor in cognitive psychology. Language is what is used as the of import source of communication for humans and is influenced by both internal and external factors and since cognitive psychology is the investigation of all mental abilities the processing of language plays an important role. There are two different proposals in regards to the relationship of language to other cognitive processes. The modularity h ypothesis proposed that there are some aspects of language, especially syntactic processes, will function autonomously, and independently of any other cognitive process. This recent proposal awaits a more rigorous empirical testing even though there is some evidence does exist. The second proposal is the Whorfian hypothesis of linguistic relativity, even though it is very interesting it has so far not legitimate strong or empirical support (Galotti, 2015). Cognitive psychology is the science of how the mind is organized to produce intelligent thought and how the mind is realized in the brain (Anderson, 2015). With cognitive psychology being the study of how the mind is organized to produce intelligent thought this knowledge is through either written or verbal communication. The written or verbal communication through language enables an individual to communicate thoughts and emotions. It is these thoughts and emotions that cognitive psychology attempts to understand.ConclusionLangu age is a system of communication that is governed by a set of rules and can express an infinite number of propositions. Natural language has two criteria. First it must be governed by a set of rules knows as grammar. Second it must be productive where an infinite number of things can be expressed (Galotti, 2015). Language plays an important role in the regards to cognition because it is the main communication tool used by human beings. Language has to have a storage place where pronunciation, definition, and parts of speech are stored. The storage place is called the lexicon. Lexicon is the bridge between language and knowledge. Language is a system of communication that is governed by a system of rules (Galotti, 2015). There are 4 levels of language, structure, and processing. In addition, CharlesHockett identified 13 key features of the human language. The ability to turn language into communication through words, and then pull information from a persons experiences, education, en vironment, and culture is a magnificent feat to accomplish, and it is through language that people are able to express their ideas because of the role cognition plays indoors language.ReferencesAnderson, J. Belonging: Romulus My Father and Becoming Jane Related Text

Fundamental to perceptions of belonging is the recognition of its complex temperament encompassing both(prenominal) belonging and its antithetical invention of isolation. This duality, manifested in the relationship between an individual and the people and environment they are exposed to is paramount in the development of ones individualism and therefore the definition of the institutions to which they may belong. The fragility and labyrinthine nature of belonging is explored in Raimond Gaitas Romulus, My Father through the contrasting characters of the fabricator and his titular bring forth in their incurs to assimilate to Australian culture and society.Contrasting, Julian Jarrolds biographical drama be survey Jane illustrates the influences of society on the development of an individuals character, and bring forward, the give of individuals to both challenge and conform to society in order to achieve a smell of belonging. Through its inherent duality, the complex tact ile sensation of belonging and isolation is defined by an interaction between an individual and their surrounds. The contrasting notions of belonging and isolation are explored in Gaitas annals through the conflicting experiences of the narrator and his ceded father.Illustrated through the harsh and influential environment he was exposed to in his youth, Romulus character, personality and morals were formed in unique circumstances, something that would later alienate him from other more conventional societies. Culturally and socially isolated in Australia, a landscape of rare beauty, to a European eye seemed desolate tether to Romulus attempts to replicate European society in rural Australia. The acknowledgment of this isolation by the narrator that my father could not become reconciled to it provides an understanding as to the difficulties Romulus past experiences had provided him with.Through the development of a morale code no individual, even himself could fulfil and expectat ions of others he realised were too high as shown through his tender-hearted attitude, Romulus character as his central moral concept was evidently flawed in judging others. Contrasting, Raimonds appreciative attitude towards Australia and lack of previous heathenish influence allows his to gain his identity based purely on Australian ideals and values. Contrasting however, Romulus wife Christine, raised in a similar environment to her husband, becomes the narrators conception of isolation s her personality, identity and value systems are not lodgeable to an Australian setting. Additionally, Romulus, My Father demonstrates the substance of relationships to achieve a sense of belonging. The conformation of identity achieved through the filial bond between narrator and his father permits Raimond to gain insight into his heritage and therefore develop his identity whilst allowing Romulus to prolong his identity and reside in an aspect of society.Illustrated through the abandoning of his youthful innocence, adoption of his fathers responsibility and philosophical nature and growing comprehension of Romulus struggle to belong, Raimonds experience at the time of his fathers mental deterioration is symbolic of his growing maturity and the significance of relationships in the attaining of identity. Further, through the use of first person narration and the memoir text type, the narrator effectively reflects on the personal nature of belonging in which Romulus resides.Illustrated through the significance of Hora on this filial interdependence, Gaita reflects on the impact of alternate characters on relationships through the imperative middle ground between the strict moral expectations of Romulus and the youthful naivety of Raimond that Hora creates. Consequently examined through his rationale to Romulus dilemmas including that of the shaving blade, the congressman of Horas friendship with Romulus acted as a significant influence in Raimonds development allowing him to embrace the cultural values of honesty, loyalty, courage and charity advocated by both men. However, despite similar experiences between the maternally neglectful and alienated Christine and Romulus, by the conclusion of the novel, the eulogy to Romulus by Raimond reflecting on his unhesitating acceptance, super acid humanity and furthermore the recognition of this by members of the society, portrays that Romulus was accepted in a manner suitable for a migrant in the contextual climate. Contrasting to Gaitas Romulus, My Father, Julian Jarrolds biographical drama Becoming Jane is concerned with an individuals ability to redefine themselves in order to belong to a inconsistent society.Through the societal and cultural relationship between Jane Austen and her patriarchal English society, a sense of belonging is preceded by an extensive experience of isolation. Illustrated by her accepted discontentedness at the ideals portrayed by her Georgian England society or marriage and suppression of individuality, Austens feministic, professional and somewhat modern and radical perceptions of love and versed equality are means by which she attempts to adapt to incorporate her desires. The acceptable notion that affection is desirable, money is absolutely indispensable, reflected by traditional characters of society further enphisises the female position in society and the limited institutions to which they were permitted to belong. Accentuated through Lady Greshams enquiring as to if anything can be done about Austens literary ambitions, Janes isolation from a society, which fails to cater for her needs, is expressed through a disapproval of her actions from traditionalist members of Georgian England.Further demonstration of the significance of societal influences on the concept of belonging occurs in the final scene of the film when, whilst dressed in pure white, Austen offers to read her novel to a crowd of young girls, hence, alluding to the cyclical nature o f society in which constant development and compromising of culture is caused by a constant incorporation of individual desires into a set social construct. Furthermore, Becoming Jane illustrates the significance of relationships in developing and maintaining identity.Outlined by her original devotion to family, Janes discontent in society is a result of her changing opinions, as experiences in the relationships to which she is exposed, create a feeling of angst and dissatisfaction within the character. As relationships around her diminish as conveyed through emotional writing scenes, Jane seeks comfort in relationships absent from her original moral formation represented by her family and Lady Gresham.Illustrated through Janes new relationship with Tom Lefroy, Austen is able to confirm and strengthen her desire to adapt the society in which she lives. Lefroys characters, originally black costuming gradually becomes lighter as the responder recognizes his eventual encouragement for Austens desires. Foremost however, is Janes decision to abandon love at the end of the film as protest to the restricting nature of her society. The good do not always come to good ends. It is a truth universally acknowledged. Jane Austen As her desirable relationship becomes impossible due to societal expectations and formalities, Jane rejects all subsequent offers for marriage, as her values, much same(p) Romulus, are unchanged despite societies attempts to conform them. Through this, the interaction between relationships and socially accepted relationships is explored in a manner that both alienates and accepts. The complex notion of belonging and isolation is created through an interaction between society, culture and relationships.Through Gaitas memoir addressing the impact of society and culture on individuals and their attempts to identify themselves through relationships, Jarrolds contrasting film Becoming Jane addresses the more radical concept of belonging where an indivi dual attempts to conform a society to their own needs and desires as conflicting to adjusting their own character to meet societal expectations. Through the contrasting notions and concepts of belonging, this multi-faceted notion is addressed through many varied perspectives reflected through relationship, cultural and societal significance to individuals in their respective societies.

Mechanics and Newton’s Law

For billion of years, the Earth has been tirelessly orbiting around the Sun. This repetitive head was kept by the virtue of gravitational force. And for us to ascertain the whole story about this, we need not to travel away from the Earth. Instead we scarcely study these things in our pla scratch. We can study them by relating the works of vehicles in a curved road, a plane making a landing on the airport, and many a(prenominal) more. And we can understand altogether of these through Physics and its branch mechanics.Physics is the study of the basic principles that include light and matter, in order to discover and understand these implications of these laws, we can use the scientific method. There assumptions that there are rules and guidelines that should be followed for the universe to function. And these rules are partially understood by human beings (Crowell 22). While Mechanics is the branch of Physics that deals with the study of motion, matter, force and associated rel ationships between them (Alinea et al 29).And about 300 years ago, a brilliant mind was able to understand and bear on his studies to everything that is concerned and related to the unanswered questions about the universe. This man named Isaac Newton came up with different conclusions and theories that are now fully accepted by the science society. His experiments gave answers to those questions and he left us with more things to think and discover. When he was about 23 years old, Sir Isaac Newton developed theories about gravitation in 1666, he claimed that all things fall to the earth because of a force called gravity keeps everything to be attracted and pulled down to earth. This idea came up when he was seating below an apple tree, then absolutely an apple fell down to his head. And on that day on he wondered why everything falls to the earth. Sir Isaac Newton Concluded that the Force between two bulk containing bodies is given by the formulaF=G x (mass1 x mass2)/ (r) (r)Where F= force, G is the gravitational constant which is 6.67 x 10-11 N m2 kg-2, M1 and M2 are the passel of the two physical objects, and r2 is the square of their distance from each other. This experiment determines the attraction of objects through their masses. We can relate this to large quantities like stars, planets and other heavenly bodies. And even human race have attraction of forces from other things but these forces are very small and negligible in nature.About 20 years later, in 1686, he presented his trey laws of motions-the fair play of Inertia, the Law of Acceleration, and the Law of Interaction. These laws are to define, study, and understand the principles of forces and their interactions with each other along with other aspects which include acceleration Gravity, mass, and velocity. The first Law of Motion is called the Law of Inertia. It states that when a body is acted upon by a adjust net force, the velocity remains constant. This velocity can be either at zer o or non-zero magnitude (Alinea et al 35). This means that an object at rest, when acted upon by a zero net force, the object remains at rest. And if a moving object is acted upon by a zero net force, the object remains at that velocity and directionImagine a car moving in a straight direction, if you exert two equal forces on either sides of the car, which leave cancel each other and the result will be a zero net force, the motion of the car will remain the same. And this is also true with objects at zero motion or at rest. A good congressman of this law in our daily life is when you are sleeping. Assume that when you sleep, you were at zero motion. And your wife suddenly pushed you to the other side of the bed, and the tendency for you is to fall on the floor because the force acted upon you was non-zero. If you have another person onyour other side, and that person will exert a force equal to what your wife will exert at the same time but opposite in direction, you will surely not to fall.Newtons second law of motion was the Law of acceleration. It states that a body acted upon by an external on-zero net force will accelerate. And the net force is mathematically equal to the mass of the body time the acceleration (Alinea et al 35).Newton also made an explanation to the tendency of an object to move when acted by an external non-zero force. He gave the formula F=ma, Where F is the force acted upon the object, m is the mass of the object, and a is the acceleration of the object due to the exertion of the force. Experiments also show that the acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass, given by the formula a=F/m.This law explains why objects move when they are hit. An example is the car accident of former senator Rene Saguisag. According to the news, the van of the Mr. Saguisag was hit by a truck and it went about 20 to 30 meters before divergence stop. The Law of acceleration can explained to what happened to the van. Because the van was hit only in unmatched side, the tendency of the van is to move and accelerate in the direction of the external force acted upon it.Another example is when you are walking down a path and suddenly you was hit by a muscular man about 200 Kilograms, and the tendency is you will move according to the direction that man was going and you will be accelerating due to the force acted upon you by that man. It happens all the time, even between pre-school pupils. The last law of motion is the Law of Interaction. It was stated that if an object A applies a force on another object B, object B is also applying the same amount of force but in opposite direction. And that their net force is zero (Crowell 145).It means that if you exert a force or effort to an object, the object exert the same amount of force but in opposite direction. For example, if you open a door, the door exerts equal amount of force to effort you exert on it. Much like ofwhat you do to others, they do it unto you.at once that these l aws explain and answer our questions about the universe, we can now relate it from the simplest parts of our daily life to the most complex structure of the universe. And for further analyzing and continuous exploration of the still undiscovered mysteries of the universe, we can develop and sustain answers to future questions that will make us enlighten our minds. And we need to cooperate and be part of the festering family of science that rooted from the intuitive and curiosity of the human brain to gain more knowledge in order to attain the best for our lives. And if I am not mistaken, we deserve to be the beings that were created to be alive. And every mind has the will to understand the whole of life, and what lies behind all those mysteries. And maybe we can account that for our Creator. working CitedCrowell, Benjamin. Newtonian Physics. California Light and Matter, 1998Alinea, Allan L., et al. General Physics I. American Films and Backhoe Operators Essay

Analysis Jim worked as a laborer for a gas utility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. When the hazard came to apply for a spikelethoe/front-end-loader operator meditate, he was excited. Three people applied. To select the one who would get the business, the telephoner asked each of them to go out and actually work on the backhoe for a day. Jim felt his chance for the job disappear because he had never even driven a tractor, let alone used a backhoe. When he went out, he did not know how to start the tractor. One of the separate backhoe operators had to show him. He managed by the day, and to his surprise, did better than the others. He was given the job. On his first day at the new job, one of the other backhoe operators showed him where to check the hydraulic fluid and said, These old Masseys are foolproof. You will be okay. Jim taught himself how to dig a clutter by trial and error. He initially believed that the best way was to fill the bucket as very much as possible before lifting it out of the plenty and emptying it.He would wiggle the bucket back and forth until it was submerged and then curl it. When it came out of the hole, the earth would be falling off the sides. This job was not so difficult after all, he thought. He cut through his first weewee cable about two weeks after starting his new job. Going into a deep, muddy hole did not make the crew happy. After Jim cut through his third water line, the crew head pulled him aside and said, You are taking too much earth out with each bucket, so you get intot feel the bucket hitting the water line ease up a bit. urine lines were usually six to eight feet down, so Jim would dig until about four feet and then try to be more(prenominal) than careful. It was then that he pulled up some telephone lines that were only about three feet deep. Realizing that more was involved in operating a backhoe than he first had thought, he sought out crest Granger, who was known to have broken a water line only twice i n his 15 years. It was said that he was so solid that he could dig underneath the gas linesa cite that Jim doubted. Bill said, You need to be able to feel any restriction. The way to do that is to have more than one of your levers open at the same time. Operating the bucket lever and the boom lever at the same time reduces the power and causes the machine to stop rather than cut through a line of any geek. Jim began to use this method but still broke water lines. The difference now was that he knew immediately when he broke a line. He could feel the extra pull, whereas in the past, he gear up out either by seeing water gushing up or by comprehend the crew chief swearing at him. He was getting better. Jim never did become as good as Bill Granger. In fact, two years later, he applied for another job as gas repairperson and was promoted, but the schooling as a gas repairperson was not much better. Case Questions 1. What are the potential costs to this lack of training? Why do you think the company operated in this manner? 2. What type of training would you recommend OJT, classroom, or a combination? Describe what the training might entail. 3. What type of training environment would you provide? 4. Who would you get to do the training, and why? 5. Would you consider purchasing a training program for backhoe operators? Provide your rationale.

Freedom of Pakistan and India

The Freedom of Pakistan and India Plan of the Investigation In this essay, I chose to further investigate the freedom of Pakistan and India. On August 14, 1947, there was the birth of the new Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The very next day India had won its freedom from colonial rule lasting three hundred fifty geezerhood. The partition of India, following domain of a function War II, is the most tragic political event to affect India in its history. The partition divided Hindus and Muslims, who had lived in concert for nearly three hundred fifty years. It led to endless boundary disputes, three wars between the two neighbors, a nuclear powered arms race, and state-sponsored terrorism. Summary of Evidence The freedom movements galvanizeed when the Englishman Allan Hume helped a group of Indians start the Indian National sexual congress in 1885, which didnt compete with British power. In the early 1900s, Bal Gangadhar Tilak brought a new faction within it, whose aim was independen ce. The Indian National Congress also had socialist impacts. In 1906, a enormous split occurred and the few Muslim thats were in the Indian National Congress left, and a group c onlyed the Muslim confederacy was formed. There are three main reasons that the Muslim ultra nationalistic movement emerged later than the Hindu movement. The first one is because the Muslims had their own ghostly schools and did not care virtually(predicate) western thought as much as they should have. This was a problem because it was an important characteristic of the leading of the revolutionaries. Secondly, the Muslims in the Indian National League were decreasing due to the increase in Hindu nationalism. Thirdly, the big bang was a dispute that occurred 1905-1911 in Bengal. In 1905, the British redrew the borders, giving the Muslims a majority of the districts. This inconvenience oneself the Hindus and in 1911, this decision was reversed. In 1906, as a result, there were two parties working for i ndependence the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. In 1915, Mohandas Gandhi arrived in India. Gandhi obtained a degree in law with roll in the hay in nonviolent protests. Gandhi had the qualities to find peace with the Hindus for a greater cause, which was independence. He was well qualified. In his work, he actually caused pressure, causing the British Parliament to pass the Goernment of India Act. The act gave Indians the chance to have a law-making group, but theBritish Viceroy had the power to veto and the British were still the supreme rulers of India. The Hindus and Muslims were not satisfies with this act. The take Indian legislature was formed by popularity. The Muslims had little repbegrudgeation, which upset them that the Hindu had to a greater extent power over them. Gandhi tried to make peace, but in the elected congress there was no room for Muslims. The Hindus in the congress made it so the Muslims had limited rights. This upset the Muslims tremendously and was the final break between Hindus and Muslims. military rating of SourcesThere are three main reasons for the partition of India. The first is that the British used the divide and whip principle to rule India and had to instead use the divide and relinquish demands of Muslims. Secondly, the British thought that there were more people in the Muslim League pushing for Pakistan than there really were. They also didnt get a line why the Muslims were in every village and couldnt move to Pakistan. Analysis In India, many nationalistic movements had started and nationalism had grown tremendously. For example, the British made advances in transportation and communication. The British did not care about the customs of the people of India, which caused a distance between the ruler and the people. Therefore, the Indian National Congress was assay to get Britain to Quit India. The Muslim League came up with the idea for the British to divide up the agriculture and then quit. The British implanted on this idea, but were also fearful of the potential threat that the Muslims. They had previously ruled the subcontinent for over 300 years under the Mughal Empire, so the British didnt wanted aversion amongst them. They decided to separate the Muslims in India. In order to do so, the British helped establish the M. A. O. College at Aligarh and support the All-India Muslim Conference, which were institutions that leaders of the Muslim League and Pakistan ideology came from and were placed on a separate electorate. The Muslims and the Hindus of India had phantasmal conflicts amongst one another. The people that were rooted from India felt that the nature of Islam called for a communal Muslim society because that is all that they know. This idea made it hard for Muslims to accept change and refused to learn English or associate with the British especially because the Hindus were in high ranked positions in the government. The Muslims felt like the British favored Hindus. T he Hindus resent the Muslims because of their formal rule. They wanted to make Hindi the national language, rather than Urdu. The Hindus and Muslims merely just fought for power. The Muslim League was further convinced by the Congress that it was impossible to live in an undivided India due to religious issues. For example, the Bande Matram was the national anthem that was forced to be sung in the schools, which expressed anti-Muslim sentiments. Conclusion After years of oppression, at midnight on August 14, 1947, India was deemed an independent nation. Jawaharlal Nehru ruled as the first Prime Minister of the pertly emancipated country. Gandhi was opposed to India being divided. In response, he spent the day in Calcutta fasting and praying. Muslims in the northern region of India were absorbed into Pakistan, and riots ensued.Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs found themselves at war with each other, and Kashmir and the surrounding area became a callous that greatly contributed to the First Indo- Pakistani War, lasting for two years, from 1947 to 1949. India and Pakistan were both granted full self-rule, with the King- emperor butterfly being crowned Head of State of both countries. The Governor General served a King-Emperors representative, and in 1948, Chakravarti Rajgopalachi ensued Mountbatten. Mohammed Ali Jinnah stepped up as Pakistans Governor General, and Liaquat Ali Khan became Prime Minister. Juan A. Torres Rodriguez D01596038 Mini Case Assignment rump pot. started in 1902 as Daytons ironic Goods company. At 1911, Daytons Dry Goods is renames as Dayton company, and commonly known as Daytons Department Store. In 1946 Daytons Department Stores started giving the community back 5% of their pretax profits, a practice that position Corp still maintains. During the 1960s Daytons create a new kind of store to appeal the canaille called scar, opening the first take store in the Twin Cities on May 1, 1962. The industry welkin in which Target Corpo proportionalityn competes is in the retail sector reaching the $62. 7 Billion in sales. As mentioned above, Target competes in the retail sector, which makes the operating risks of the company mainly foc utilize on guests perceptions, differentiation of brand, and anticipating consumer preferences to boost their sales, gross margin and profitability. If we take a look at Targets 10K, the first risk factor they mention is the ab ility of differentiate the business from other retailers by creating attractive value propositions through a careful combination of damage, merchandise assortment, convenience, guest service and merchandising efforts.Another risk that all companies in this sector face is the macroeconomic condition of the country and the impact this has in their consumers. This lead us to the financial risk the company might have. One of the financial risks we have to address in any type of company is the debt to broad(a) capitalization ratio. Based on financial schooling of their 2011 report, we can calculate the debt to total capitalization ratio in the following manner Total debt 15,726 jillion Total stockholders equity 15,487 million, therefore 15,726 / 31,213= . 50 or 50%Comparing their debt to total capitalization ratio with industry average, Targets is too high. The industry debt to total capitalization ratio is 0. 36. Comparing the financial information of previous years Target went fr om 0. 58 in 2009 to 0. 52 in 2010, to 0. 50 in 2011. Overall, Target is improving significantly their debt to capitalization ratio, but still has some die to do. In regards of Target stock, currently they dont have any preferred stock outstanding, full common stock. Targets common stock is traded in the NYSE as TGT. The price of its common stock as of today is $62. 0, going up 0. 06 points. Targets cash dividend contain on the commonplace trite is 0. 0192 = 1. 92% = 2. 0 Cash dividends declared per share $1. 20 legitimate stock price $62. 50 Cash dividend yield= 1. 15 dividends declared/ 62. 50 stock price = 1. 92 = 2. 0 Targets market capitalization is 668. 4 million shares issued and outstanding x $62. 50 of stock prices = 41. 8 Billion Continuing with Targets capital structure, if we look at Targets liabilities section Short portion of Long-Term Debt = $3. 3 Billion Long-term debt = $15. 2 Billion Therefore the total debt for Target would be . 3 B + 15. 2 B = 18. 5 Billion Dollars Taking the previous deliberateness of Targets market capitalization of 41. 8 the total capitalization would be 18. 5 B + 41. 8 B = 60. 3 Billion, or 31% Debt 69% Equity As of November 18, 2012, Targets current beta is . 48. Now if we would like to calculate what would be Targets new beta without the long-term debt (unlevered beta) we need to use the Hamada formula for the unlevered beta bu= b/ 1 +(1-T)(D/S) bu= . 48 / 1 + (1-34. 3%) (18. 5/40. 6) bu= . 37 If Target would not have any long-term debt, its beta would be of . 7. Moving to Targets current Marginal measure Rate, according to the Income Statement found at Targets annual report, the rate is 34. 3%. In order to calculate Targets apostrophize of debt before and after taxes, we need to look for the bonds issued by a corporation. Since Target has not issued bonds, I took the cost of a long-term debt due in 2020 as my example. The rate of that long-term debt is 3. 875%. This would be the damage of debt before any ta xes taken. Now to calculate the Cost of Debt after tax, we need to proceed with the following calculation 3. 875 ( 1 34. %) = 2. 545875 As mentioned before, Target doesnt have any preferred stock. We can calculate the Cost of Equity using the Risk Free Rate of 3. 00% and a Risk Premium of 7. 5% points. victimization the new beta of . 48 we can determine what is the Expected Total return by Common Stockholders rRF = 3. 00 rRP = 7. 5 b= . 48 Cost of Equity = rRF + (rRP x b) =3. 00% + (7. 5% pts x 0. 48) = 0. 066 ? 6. 6% habituated the dividend yield of 2. 0 we can also determine the Expected annual appreciation of Targets Common Stock 6. 6% Total Return 2. 0 Dividend Yield = 4. % of E. A. A. With the previous information mensural we could proceed and calculate the Weighted Average Cost of Capital wd = 31% ws = 69% rs = 6. 6% rd = 3. 875% Tax = 34. 3 WACC = wd ( 1 T)rd + ws(rs) =31% ( 1 34. 3%) 3. 875% + (69% x 6. 6%) = 0. 053432 = 5. 3432% One of the last things used to evaluate in order to consider investing in a company is its cost pay Multiple. Targets Price Earnings Multiple is calculated the following way Stock Price= $62. 50 Earnings Per Share = $4. 50 P/E = Stock Price / EPS = 62. 50 / 4. 50 = 13. 89If we compare Targets P/E ratio with Wal-Mart, which is in the same industry, (14. 03 P/E), Targets P/E is within ndustry. http//finance. yahoo. com/q/bc? s=TGT+Basic+Chart&t=5y This graph was retrieved from Yahoo Financial. In here we can confabulate the performance of Targets Stock (TGT) during the one-time(prenominal) five years. In 2008 Targets started at approximately $55. 00 looking at 2009, the stock plummeted from the 60s to the mid 20s, which reflects the market crash. After this episode in the economy we can see that Targets stock has recovered significantly. After performing the calculations, Targets capital structure is optimal. However, the debt to capitalization ratio is high, at 50%. Target needs to lower its Long-Term Debt. Comparing T argets debt to capital to the industry average, the industry average is 0. 36. However I would invest in Target. I find I would have an advantage over outsiders, because I used to work at Target Corporation. Target is a company that is constantly growing, and their sales demonstrate their market advantage over other retailers. What confident(p) me to invest into Target mostly was the P/E ratio.Comparing it to a corporation like Wal-Mart, which is really successful, Targets P/E ratio is acceptable and attractive. Niki Caro’s Whale Rider †An analysis in relation to journeys Essay

The inner journey is one which involves the hurdling of psychological barriers, as well as cultural and social obstacles, rather than besides a carnal trek. The novel Things Fall Ap craft (1958) by Chinua Achebe and the film Whale Rider (2002) by Niki Caro both hollo the overcoming of emotional boundaries, while following the progress of the main characters. Issues such as cultural differences and gender compare are presented by the composers through the clever use of devices appropriate to the medium, while using the post-colonial context to strain these issues.Similar to Things Fall Apart, the film Whale Rider by Niki Caro explores the breakdown of Maori culture in post-colonial raw(a) Zealand. It follows the journeys of Pai, a young girl, and Koro, her grandfather, who both seek to uphold and preserve the Maori tradition, which has been negatively influenced by the European culture. During the film, Pai transforms from an unwished child to the new village leader, while cha llenging the Maori customs through her curiosity, for example when she learns the sacred art of the taiaha. Koro, who disapproves of her actions, smashes a cup in his anger. Koros wife, Flowers, reprimands him, saying, You might be the boss out there, but Im the boss in this kitchen. Caro is addressing the gender barrier which exists in the Maori culture, an obstacle which Pai overcomes in her journey.Despite beingness reprimanded by Koro, Pai still retains great love for him, as seen in her speech on her ancestors, where she dedicates her words to Koro. The sign long shot places emphasis on Pai, while the camera is positioned at a low-angle, suggesting that she has gained authority and leadership. This burst symbolises one of the many emotional hurdles she has had to overcome in her inner journey. Moreover, her catharsis can be related to Okonkwos moments of compassion, thus highlighting the similarity between their journeys.Similar to Okonkwo, Koro progresses on a journey, lin eage at the height of power, with Caro using several symbols to signify this, such as the whale tooth. The use of disconsolate music and close-up shots of Koro in the scene where he loses the tooth emphasises his sorrow. In the following scene, Caroemploys dark lighting to highlight Koros melancholy, while he strokes the staff, symbolising that it is his last shred of authority. Pais voiceover informs the audience on Koros supplication for help and indicates a shift in power and authority as Pai begins to assume her role as leader, But they werent listening, so I tried.Koros discovery of the whales allows him to undergo an epiphany and continue on his journey. Caro has positioned the event during the night, with its dark connotations enhancing the negative atmosphere of the scene. Furthermore, Koros staff is washed away, symbolising that he has doomed all of his power. Koro later realises the error of his ways and acknowledges Pai as their leader, Wise leader, forgive me. I am jus t a fledgling new to flight. Koros epiphany is thus one of the greatest differences between the both texts, as he is able to surpass the greatest obstacle in his journey and move forward, whereas Okonkwo is uneffective to change, leading to his death.Works CitedWhale Rider. Implications of Tuition-Free College Education Essay

In considering the matter of tuition-free college fosterage for all(a) qualified citizens, one must ask what impact there will be on association in customary, national economics and the educational system over all. In removing all economical barriers to education on the four-year level, an plusd number of qualified employees will exist and the level of Masters and doctorial degrees would heighten. This will run humanity better in allowing a higher level of professionalism and informed mass for the countries in question. In a study performed by De-Fraja in 2002, the results were divided between the bright and the unintelligent. In allowing a task-supported educational system, the study shows that more capable individuals who were not afforded an educational opportunity would be allowed to serve better the needs of the government and the populace in general. It also insinuates that the unfortunate challenged people would become more efficient if they opted for education, wherea s otherwise they may become a burden on the system in general. In affording these opportunities, a higher-trained workforce becomes available, thereby giving more opportunity for tax-supported education from the increase in tax payments per capita. De-Fraja further supposes that the option of private education will widen the gap between the privileged and the non- alone at least society is improved boilers suit (De-Fraja 2002). Feldman and Steenbergen implicate the need to provide these opportunities in term of secular humanism. In allowing underprivileged individuals the ability to improve themselves, we are thereby improving our own society. The study argues that, humanitarianism is an important element of the Ameri corporation sociopolitical ethos, although it has received little attention in the public opinion literature, (Feldman & Steenbergen, 2001). With the kind welfare system carrying a negative reputation, they suggest that the educational system would be impacted by th is, but this is the area to address rather than the positives that would come from the tuition-free programs. Dynarski looks at the issue from an economics point of view.In contending that the financial burden of providing such a system would be heavy, the resulting influx of employee base would increase the in operation(p) capital of the project, thus off-setting the cost in the end. She also poses that even a $1,000 grant for students will increase the participation levels by 4-6%. In offering free college in the public education sector, the private government can still offer varying levels of programs, but the populace overall will contribute in a positive manner.Although she states that the obvious impact would be in satisfactory standards for these programs, with the proper system in place, the concern should be effectively addressed, thus making the decision economically viable (Dynarski, 2002). Finally, as a practical implication, we look at the evidence offered by Foondun. In looking at the effect of free-tuition in developed and developing countries, Foondun found that while developing nations do not always have the lucid plan to offer educational programs, as countries grow the sponsorship of private schools increase. With this increase, one realises betterment in the general populace and the economic situation overall. With an increase in educated individuals, the shift begins to slide towards betterment of the republic and its people, humanitarian efforts increasing on a larger scale. With this would follow the tuition-free education systems, thereby improving the overall condition of the country (Foondun 2002). In conclusion, by looking at the economic, humanitarian, and practical implications of free-tuition offered to all qualified individuals, we can see that the impact will be positive. In looking at the growth potential of countries specifically, we find that without the founding of an educated populous, a developing nation will remain a t a disadvantage. In fostering education, tax bases increase, as does the livelihood of humanity throughout. Free-tuition for secondary educational is worthwhile and recommended overall.ReferencesDe-Fraja, G.
